Void (Deck) the Walls
Void (Deck) The Walls is a roving art installation commissioned by National Gallery Singapore and CapitaLand Malls for Light to Night Festival 2026 and Singapore Art Week 2026, responding to the theme The Power in Us.
The installation reimagines the familiar HDB void deck as a transparent, illuminated structure, complete with iconic void deck seating and chess tables—spaces where people naturally gather, rest, and connect. Visitors are invited to play chess, linger, and interact, echoing the communal spirit that defines these everyday neighbourhood spaces.
A playful “mama stall” anchors the installation, featuring gachapons containing coloured acrylic panels and stickers that allow visitors to customise their own keychains. The simple act of swapping stickers becomes another catalyst for interaction and exchange. Mirroring the form of the National Gallery logo, Void (Deck) The Walls transforms humble architectural elements into a glowing monument to togetherness, celebrating how collective strength is quietly built through daily rituals of community life.
